National Education Policy
Education is a continuous process and its scope has been increasing with time, each nation develops its specific education system by diversifying the range of Education.
India’s first education policy was made in 1968, based on a 10+2+3 structure. The Janata Party government formed in 1977 modified and reformed it on the 8+2+3 structure but in 1979 the Janata Party government lost the majority in the Parliament and again the Congress government was formed at the center which again implemented the 1968 education policy.
After the death of Indira Gandhi in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of the country and under his leadership, the National Education Policy 1986 was introduced in the Parliament.
Nationwide Education Structure
National Education Policy 1986 emphasizes on uniform education structure for the whole country. This education policy implemented a 10+2+3 structure in which 3 years of graduation, 2 years intermediate, 5 years primary, 3 years upper primary, and 2 years secondary level education The system was adopted.
Equality of Education
Every State shall provide equal opportunities for education to all without any discrimination. It was ensured that no one was discriminated against on the basis of gender, on the basis of caste, on the basis of disability.
Nationwide Curriculum Structure
To Enhance the national values and a sense of national integration, a uniform curriculum was recommended for the entire nation. The right to make a curriculum was given to both the Center and the State.
Women’s Education
Emphasis was laid on providing meaningful education to women for women’s empowerment. Emphasis was laid on giving vocational education to women to make them financially independent. Women’s participation in vocational education promotes equality between women and men and reduces discrimination between them.

Operation Black Board was a centrally sponsored program launched to enhance the quality of primary education.
Teacher Training
Teachers were considered to be the main part of the national education system because teachers are the builders of citizens, society, and country. The service conditions of teachers were improved, their pay scale was increased and provision was made to give them special training to increase the quality of teachers.
Navodaya Vidyalaya was established under the National Education Policy 1986. Under this, there was a provision for the establishment of one Navodaya Vidyalaya and Model School in each district of the country. Navodaya Vidyalaya provides fully residential and free education. In this school, the facilities for education are provided to the influential children of rural and hilly areas. A reservation facility was also provided for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Navodaya Vidyalaya.
