There are mainly four language families in India which are as follows
1. Indo-Aryan language family
2. Dravidian language family
3. Austro-Asiatic language family
4. Tibeto-Burman language family
- Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Oriya, Kashmiri, etc. are the languages spoken in North India are the Indo-Aryan language family.
- The Dravidian language family includes languages spoken in South India like Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada etc.
- Santhali, Munda, etc., are languages spoken in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh Belonging to the Austro-Asian language family.
- The Tibeto-Burman language family includes Manipuri, Tripuri, Garo, Bodo, Mizo, etc. languages spoken in the Northeast.
Constitutional knowledge related to language
The official language of India has been included in Part 17 and Schedule 8 of the Constitution of India. Articles 343 to 351 have detailed provisions on the official language of the Republic of India.
Total 22 languages are included in schedule 8 which are as follows
Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Oriya, Bengali, Assamese, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Nepali, Manipuri, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Santhali.
Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali were accepted as official languages in 2003 through the 92nd Constitutional Amendment.
Konkani, Nepali and Manipuri were declared official languages in 1992 through the 71st Constitutional Amendment.
Sindhi was the first language which was declared as the official language in 1967 through the constitution amendment. (21st constitutional amendment)
At the time of the implementation of the constitution, only 14 languages had the status of official language. Later on 21st, 71st and 92nd constitutional amendment, 8 more languages were included in schedule 8.
Constitutional amendments 21, 71 and 92 are related to official language which were done in 1967, 1992 and 2003 respectively.
